Hi everybody,

Thanks for your attention in class this weekend. You asked some good questions, and before life takes over and I don't get the opportunity to answer them, I thought I would try to find answers to them right away tonight.

Somebody asked about proper storage of insulin. I found several sources that talked about keeping insulin up to 28 days unrefrigerated, but then I found this article, How Long Should Insulin Be Used Once a Vial Is Started?, which talks about how much variation there is from one manufacturer to another in terms of storage and expiration date recommendations.

Somebody had a personal interest in Type 1.5 diabetes, Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adulthood. I found these articles by searching for the topic on the American Diabetes Association web site:

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults -- Definition, Prevalence, ß-Cell Function, and Treatment

What’s in a Name -- Latent autoimmune diabetes of adults, type 1.5, adult-onset, and type 1 diabetes

And last, somebody asked what kinds of routine testing diabetic children should have. These are the current ADA recommendations:

Annual exams and tests after having type 1 diabetes for 3 to 5 years

Dilated eye exam (ophthalmoscopy)

Foot exam for diabetic neuropathy

Annual exams and tests after having diabetes for 5 years

Microalbumin urine test

Blood creatinine test for kidney function

And in the process of doing the research on that topic, I stumbled upon Care of Children With Diabetes in the School and Day Care Setting, which I thought one person who I think was a school nurse, might find helpful.

Another important web site that I hadn't included on the printed page is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, for issues specific to type 1 diabetes.

Thanks again for your attention, and happy Thanksgiving!

Jacky
